Mechanical Faculty was established on September 1, 1971 by Order No. 509 of the first Rector of the Ural Electromechanical Institute of Railways Ivan Utkin. The faculty was created based on the discipline: "Railway Car Construction and Railway Cars", that was a part of "Electromechanical faculty".
For more than 40 years the Faculty has been training (on "Railway Cars" discipline) engineers in the field of railway transport, repair, production and maintenance of railway cars. Throughout this period, the chair has trained more than two thousand mechanical engineers. Since 1992, the Chair performs special-purpose training of students for FSUE "PO Uralvagonzavod" (Nizhny Tagil), carried out by special requests.
Since 2003, the faculty has been offering "Mechatronics" discipline, where the students are given comprehensive in-depth knowledge of mechanics and applied mathematics, microprocessor technology, computer systems management and design, needed to work in various branches of engineering, instrumentation and operation of mechatronic systems. In 2008 the first graduation took place, all graduate theses were defended in English.
Graduates of the Mechanical Faculty are provided with choice of future employment (which is very important in our time) from railway transport, industry enterprises and small businesses.
Those graduates who wish to continue their student research work are offered the opportunity to enroll in the postgraduate studies under the discipline 05.22.07 "Railway rolling stock and train traction" at the Chair "Cars" and "Mechatronics". Candidates for PhD in Engineering can defend the prepared thesis at the Scientific Council of the University.
Since 2011, the Faculty offers the following Bachelor's and Specialist's Programmes under the new federal higher educational standard VPO:
